Buried Treasure

The earth cracks now
in giggling waves it all breaks free
The treasure’s what I seek
my hands reach down past sharp debris

There’s many stones
the memories peak
my hands reach down past sharp debris
the treasure’s what I seek

There’s so much glass
and pain to flee
the treasure’s what I seek
my hands reach down past sharp debris

I see her now, a sideways glance
but can I touch her cheek?
My hands reach down past sharp debris
the treasure’s what I seek

Written for dVerse, today Grace is hosting and asks us to write a Mirrored Refrain.

A Mirrored Refrain “is a rhyming verse form constructed by Stephanie Repnyek. The poem is formed by three or more quatrains where two lines within the quatrain are the ‘mirrored refrain’ or alternating refrain. The rhyme scheme is as follows: xaBA, xbAB, xaBA, xbAB. x represents the only lines that do not rhyme within the poem. A and B represent the refrain.”

  1. I love how this was also a mirror in a the mirrorred refrain form. That last stanza brings it home for me:

I see her now, a sideways glance
but can I touch her cheek?
My hands reach down past sharp debris
    the treasure’s what I seek

  2. The treasure is in the mirror waiting for discovery. Great choice of refrain to get your message across. The photo really compliments your words. It also leaves the reader with thoughts to ponder.

  3. Is this a memory, or a moment unfolding? Is someone being rescued or is the writer searching for answers in their subconscious? Quite mysterious! I enjoyed reading this ❤

    1. Thanks, Sunra! It’s a metaphorical earthquake and then finding what lies beneath and searching for your own buried treasure in the debris of some traumatic event. Hope that helps! ☺️

      1. Thanks Tricia! Yes I gathered that meaning at the end and enjoyed the ambiguity 😊 I was sort of pontificating out loud rather than asking you direct questions! 😄 Sorry about that. Thank you for explaining 💕

  4. This is absolutely stunning, Tricia 😀 I especially admire; “There’s many stones/the memories peak/my hands reach down past sharp debris/the treasure’s what I seek.” 💝💝
